Alcoholism….It’s Still a Problem

Image
Originally posted on Pinnacle Treatment Centers Alcoholism seems to have lost its place as the number one addiction problem in America. The  opioid epidemic  is front and center in our minds when the topic of  addiction  comes up in discussion. But has alcoholism really gone anywhere? Not according to the statistics reported by the National Institute of Health (NIH). According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 14.4 million adults in the U.S. ages 18 and older (5.8% of this age group) had a diagnosis of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). This includes 9.2 million men and 5.3 million women. Only about 7.9 percent of these people received treatment in the past year. An estimated 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. The first is tobacco, and the second is poor diet and physical inactivity. In 2015, nearly half of the 78,529 liver disease deaths involved alcoho...

We want to manage our home, work, and social lives, and do it all while keeping everyone else happy. But the reality is that, for many of us, it’s a façade, because behind the scenes we’re struggling. This inner struggle between what we need to do every day and what we’re feeling is driving an increase in consumption of alcohol and substances to cope. This use is killing women at a greater rate than ever, but women’s substance use disorder remains underdiagnosed and under-treated. One of the reasons behind this epidemic among women is ingrained in our culture – women are the caregivers. As the caregivers, we help others and deeply believe we should not need help ourselves. The truth is, no matter if you are a stay-at-home, workin...

Clear your mind, sit up straight and notice the way your body feels in the chair. Take another deep breath. You are practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness has become popular and trendy, which is a good thing. Part of the reason for this is that there’s extensive science supporting its effectiveness. In forty years of research using his program,  Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) , at the University of Massachusetts,  Jon Kabat-Zinn  has shown that people who better manage their stress are more likely to keep an disease in remission, heal from surgery and recover from sicknesses. When you are stressed, your sympathetic nervous system is activated, and the body is flooded with hormones that boost ale...

Today, I’m grateful that my mother is in long-term recovery and encourages me to share my experience. I’m about to graduate from medical school and I’m applying to become a resident in psychiatry. I want to raise awareness about the disease of addiction and offer hope to other families. I find that my experience of having a mother who struggled with and ultimately recovered from a substance use disorder gives me a unique perspective. I marvel at the strength and determination it took my mom to achieve long-term recovery. I wouldn’t trade the special relationship I have with my mom today for anything. I’m able to approach my patients with the knowledge ...

Tell me a little bit about that. Ryan Hanson: So 35 year olds and in that general age bracket are people who are hitting the middle of their life. And...

Editor’s Note: Eric Webber conducts a workshop on work and money issues as part of Caron’s Grand View program.   Let’s face it – it takes money to buy food, clothing and shelter – and those are just the basics. We deal with money so frequently, yet we seldom stop to think about the deeper impact our relationship to it has on our emotional wellbeing. Money evokes feelings of self-worth, safety, security, control, freedom and power. American culture dictates that the more dollars you have in the bank, the more you are sheltered from life’s difficulties and the happier you will be. But the truth is that many people struggle with money – whether they’ve had it all their lives or made every cent themselves. Money takes a dysfunctional turn when it’s so integ...

Does Dry January work? Absolutely. Using the month of January to “take a break” from drinking alcohol has  both immediate and long-lasting benefits . Those who participate report they saved money, slept better, had more energy and lost weight. Far from drinking more once January ended,  participants tend to drink less , even months afterwards. Dry January can be a great opportunity to experience life without alcohol. Perhaps you’ve already considered it, or you’re motivated by loved ones to give it a shot. Either way, whether you decide to limit your drinking or stop entirely –...
